It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone. Eph 1:11-12
There’s a story in the South Pacific of Johnny Lingo and his “eight cow” woman. Tradition was a prospective husband negotiated the price for his bride in cows. If she was highly desirable, then the father could demand as many as 4 or at the most 6 cows; if she was somewhat lacking in charm and beauty, then he might be lucky to get even one cow for her marriage.
Sarita was one of those women. She was plain, shy, and been passed over by eligible bachelors for several years. Her father would probably have settled for a few chickens in exchange for her marriage. But Johnny walked in and offered her father the unheard of price of eight cows. No one had ever paid so much for a bride.
Johnny and Sarita went back to his island, but the buzz about his extraordinary marriage proposal for such an ordinary bride did not. A visitor heard the islanders joking about the marriage, so he made a point of going to see this woman that everyone was laughing about. When he got to Johnny’s home, the most beautiful and charming woman greeted him. He asked Johnny if this was the woman the villagers had told him about. Puffing his chest with pride, Johnny said, “I loved Sarita only, and I did not want her to think that I would bargain for at the lowest price. I did not want her to forever be known as the woman that was only worth one cow. I wanted her to know she was the most valuable woman in the islands. She is my “eight cow” wife.” That revelation had changed Sarita to be the woman her bridegroom had valued her to be. She became an eight cow woman.
2,000 years ago the Prince of Heaven divested Himself of all His riches and glories to come down and shed His last drop of blood to purchase you. God wants to make a shift in your perspective. He wants you to see and value as He sees. You are the one He came down to bring into His glorious embrace. You are the one He has chosen to be part of His family. The more revelation you have of Jesus and his glory, the more revelation you will have of who you are, and the precious value of God’s treasure in the people all around you. May the Holy Spirit open your heart and eyes to see even more His love.
